Kauri gum or amber is the fossilised sap of the giant native Kauri tree. The sap would drip onto the ground or leach from fallen trees (sometimes capturing ancient insects) and would harden and fossilise over hundreds or thousands of year in the ground. The term "amber" is reserved for the oldest and hardest examples of this material.
